SUPPORT HOMELESS MAASAI IN ARUSHA
Many Maasai are leaving their villages because their families are crying out for food, and begging for them to find a way to help them. They arrive in cities uneducated, unable to speak the national language, and with little money. Many end up hungry, homeless, unemployed or in dangerous, low-paid work. They develop health issues and are too ashamed to return home empty-handed.
Our vision is to create a hub that provides essential support services for Maasai who enter town life, providing pre-employment and life skills that will give them a chance to find a livelihood to support their families.
We are raising money to provide these much needed support services. For $45,000, Future Warriors Project can do the following for two years:
- Hire a full-time project manager
- Rent and furnish a 4 bedroom house to use as the hub until one can be built
- Run an orientation program for newly arrived Maasai in Arusha
- Run a financial literacy and basic life skills program
- Educate town-based Maasai on HIV, nutrition and other health issues
- Teach Swahili classes, computer skills and the internet
- Start English language classes
- Start a Maasai women's network
- Grow a large vegetable garden to support nutritional needs
In the long term, Future Warriors Project will provide these services
from the Maasai Hub it aims to build in the
future.

BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES FOR MAASAI
The
BOMA project has assisted 12 homeless Maasai warriors to support large
families back in their village by starting small businesses. These
businesses are helping the warriors find a pathway out of poverty and
provide their families with adequate food and shelter.
The BOMA Project has been piloted with warriors from Kiserian village. The next round of businesses will be offered in 2012. To find out how you can donate for the next business, click here.
MAASAI HUB IN ARUSHA
Building the Maasai hub is the priority project for Future Warriors. The hub will be a base for providing essential services to homeless Maasai who face major barriers and vulnerability as they enter town life. Our vision is to create a place that not only provides the necessary support for town-based Maasai, but also becomes a thriving hub of Maasai activity and opportunity.
At the hub, Maasai will:
- Be given an orientation to the city
- Find accommodation and connect with other people from their village
- Study and develop new skills
- Find out about jobs
- Find out how they can start a business
- Have a place to socialise and catch up
- Conduct meetings and pass on information
- Link back to their home communities by passing on news and messages
- Build a strong local presence and voice.
The Maasai Hub will become financially sustainable through the development of businesses on site, such as a Maasai cafe, convenience store and tourism activities. These businesses will be the training ground for promising young Maasai who want to develop new skills and venture into the business world.
We will be passionately fighting our way to raise $300,000 for this very necessary project. To find out how you can help us get there, click here.
FUTURE PROJECTS
Beyond the hub and out business opportunities project, we have plans to work with young Maasai on many more important initiatives, including:
- Giving back to Maasai tourism project
- Vocational Education Scholarsips
- P3 - Productive Pastoralist Practices
- Valuing Maasai identity and culture
